Status Updates From Your Team

How do your people update you on their work?

Assessing the evolution of your role in managing people is a complex matter, but one useful aspect is how your direct reports provide you with updates on how their assignments are progressing.

There are four types of updates your direct reports might provide to you:

  1. I have a problem. What should I do?
  2. I have a problem. Here's what I'm thinking. What's your experience?
  3. I have a problem. Here's what I'm doing. Stop me if I am wrong.
  4. I had a problem. Here's what I did. I just wanted you to know.

What types of updates are your people currently giving you? Are you clear about the kind of updates you expect and under what circumstances you expect them? You need to be very specific in order to get the result you want.

When you are specific about what level of decision making authority people have and how and when they should seek guidance, you will get another benefit in addition to them giving you updates they way you want. They will make decisions faster. Faster decisions improve business velocity, which directly effects profitability.
